- Carotid blowout (surgical emergency)
- Active wound infection with carotid exposure

- Pulsatile or arterial bleeding from wound (carotid concern)
- Difficulty breathing
- Milky drainage from wound or drain (chylous fistula)
- Fever above 38.5°C with wound erythema
