• Any difficulty breathing through the stoma, or a stoma that looks blocked by a mucus plug or crust
• Sudden heavy bleeding from the stoma, mouth, or neck wound
• Saliva or food draining through the neck incision (possible pharyngocutaneous fistula)
• Rapidly spreading neck redness, swelling, or severe pain with fever
• Thick crusting at the stoma that is hard to clear despite humidification
• Fever above 38.5°C or pus-like drainage from the incision
• Worsening neck swelling or a new fluid collection under the skin
• New or worsening difficulty or pain with swallowing once feeding has started
